An afternoon of Poetry, Art and Music in the Museum
The Irish Jewish Museum invites you to celebrate the launch of Vitor Vicente’s poetry book illustrated with paintings by Harry Kernoff on Sunday 30th April 2023 commencing at 3.00pm
Garry Craig Powell (translator) will introduce the event.
‘Harry Kernoff’s Guest’ compiles over twenty prose poems inspired by the works of Irish Jewish painter Harry Kernoff. Most of the writing, along with Kernoff’s paintings, is about everyday life in Dublin.
Nevertheless, the scope is wide, including pubs, streets, harbours and also working-class individuals. The exercise may evoke Baudelaire and his flâneur’s habit of wandering the cityscape and simultaneously reflecting on the human condition.
Vitor Vicente (1983), born in Portugal, has lived in Spain, Ireland, Poland and Hungary since 2006. Currently, he resides in Dublin. He has published books in various literary genres, with the theme of travel running through all his work. ‘Harry Kernoff’s Guest’ is his first work translated into English.
Maja Elliott is a pianist and composer. Her compositions are regularly played on Lyric FM and in 2021 she was musician in residence for Music Network’s
Dun Laoghaire Artist’s Residency. She is presently writing new music for bassoon to be performed in Sandford Church, Ranelagh, in July.
