The Irish Jewish Museum and Dublin History Festival invite you to a Talk
Yitzhak Herzog – “The Sinn Féin Rabbi”
First Chief Rabbi of the Irish Free State

Sunday 5th October 2025, 3.00 pm
Dublin City Council Historian in Residence Dr Cormac Moore will give a talk on Yitzhak Herzog, the first chief rabbi of the Irish Free State, who was a supporter of the Irish independence movement during the revolutionary decade. After 20 years in Ireland, in Belfast and Dublin, Herzog left Dublin to become Chief Rabbi of British Mandate Palestine in 1937, a role that became the most revered spiritual role in Judaism. Just over 10 years later, he became the first Chief Rabbi of the new state of Israel.
Dr Cormac Moore is an Historian-in-Residence with Dublin City Council. He is author of five books, his most recent book being The Root of All Evil: The Irish Boundary Commission (2025). He is a columnist with the Irish News as well as editor of its daily ‘On This Day’ segment.
